    Support Trade in our Communities

As Americans, we are more connected to the global economy than ever before. Our quality of life and employment opportunities rely on business that extends beyond our borders. In fact, one in five American jobs now depends on the global marketplace. I want Americans and the companies that employ them to be able to successfully compete now and well into the future. That’s why I am writing you today.

Policies that make it possible for small and medium-sized businesses to sell their products globally or get the supplies they need to develop their product are important to me. Research shows companies that participate in the global marketplace maintain a strong local presence and create good, high-paying jobs. But, it’s not just about jobs. Trade means Americans like me and my family enjoy access to goods and services from around the world, whenever we want them, however we want them, and at a competitive price.

The world has changed a lot in the last 20 years. When I think about some of those changes, it’s somewhat overwhelming. But what’s clear is that while the United States has an edge on technological advancement and innovative thinking that may not always be the case.

The U.S. market is an open, nondiscriminatory market for our trading partners, yet many firms here have trouble entering the fastest-growing foreign markets due to high-tariffs and outdated trade practices. That’s why we need trade agreements, like the Trans-Pacific Partnership, that will modernize the rules of international trade and establish high standards on the important issues.

There are some who are comfortable ignoring trade’s potential. I’m not one of them. Creating opportunities for small business, setting standards on tough issues, and creating partnerships with growing economies requires thoughtful, engaged debate to create a bright future for our children. Nothing is more important.

As your constituent, I write to encourage Congressional action for a strong U.S. trade agenda. Congress can take steps to ensure that our local communities, national economy, and our country continue to benefit from participating in a global economy. Trade has created new and exciting opportunities for all Americans. As my elected official, I am counting on you to support trade policies that ensure that all Americans and their communities can continue to grow and prosper.
